New state rules will affect 2,000 Colorado licensed child care centers

Big changes are coming to licensed child care centers statewide. Soon they’ll have to comply with new rules and regulations.

The rules will affect about 2,000 centers and 100,000 children in Colorado. The rules, set in place by the Colorado Board of Human Services, include limiting television viewing and requiring more playground time.

The rules also includes banning sugary drinks. A owner of a local day care says he thinks rules are necessary but feels not all of the changes will be effective.

“A ban on sugary foods doesn’t really teach the kids how to self-regulate in terms of how much is appropriate and how much isn’t. So if you just cut them off completely you make them mysterious and they want those kind of things more,” said David Keith, owner of Kingdom Kids Academy.

All of these new changes officially go into effect on Feb. 1st.
