Cheyenne Mountain Zoo giraffe in labor

CMZoo

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Wednesday morning, the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo announced its 10-year-old reticulated giraffe was finally in active labor.

This announcement came at 9:47 a.m. According to the CMZoo, Bailey the giraffe has been pregnant for the last 15 months. She is part of a herd of 16 reticulated giraffes at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo.

Her new calf will bring that number to 17.

Before going into active labor, Bailey was moved to a sand stall on Sept. 19 at night. According to officials, the sand helps prevent injury to the calf upon the five-foot drop it encounters as it's born.

The Cheyenne Mountain Zoo will be streaming the live birth from a camera beginning now through Oct. 21.
