Tracking Lightning at the El Paso County Fair

Lightning is possible anywhere in El Paso County.

Tonight, a warning for fair-goers from organizers at the El Paso County Fair.

They want people to beware when riding in tall objects like the Ferris Wheel.

Metal stands can also serve as conductors of electricity if lightning were to strike.

From food vendors to petting areas, most of the activities at the fair are outdoors, which makes fair-goers vulnerable if a storm pops up.

Fair organizers have an evacuation plan in place.

Suzan McCoy said, “if there’s bad weather, we have beeper units from the Calhan Fire Department and that notifies us if we’ll have severe weather. Then you have your zone and you evacuate depending on how severe the weather is,”

McCoy says storms are not unusual at the fair.

She recommends you check the weather before you head out.
