Governor Hickenlooper in southern Colorado

Gov. John Hickenlooper was in southern Colorado Wednesday. He visited the Springs Rescue Mission and Manitou Springs.

At the Springs Rescue Mission, the governor and mayor-elect John Suthers, joined others in paying tribute to organizations in the Pikes Peak region that work on ending homelessness.

“I think Colorado Springs is poised to be the first city in the state of Colorado to say, ‘We’ve got zero chronic homelessness among our vets,'” Hickenlooper said.

“We’ve got a continuum of care, people working together to come up with a plan to deal with homelessness.” Suthers said.

One of the plans discussed was a campus that will offer multiple services to people who are homeless.

Hickenlooper also visited Manitou Springs for the ribbon-cutting marking the end of Phase I and II of the Williams Canyon project, which is meant to help prevent flooding.

“They’ve come back so strong from the floods (of 2013) even with the recent rains and the challenges,” he said. “That’s a community that just doesn’t quit. They’re on so many levels, on the cutting edge for the whole state.”
