Texas murder suspect captured by U.S. Marshalls in Monument

MONUMENT, Colo. (KRDO) -- Tuesday afternoon, a Texas homicide suspect was apprehended in Monument.

According to the U.S. Marshals Service, 19-year-old John Bagwell was wanted by the Austin, Texas Police Department on a warrant for murder in the first degree. The charge was in relation to a shooting that took place in Austin in May that left a 36-year-old man dead.

On Monday, Aug. 1, the U.S. Marshals Service received information that Bagwell may have been at a truck stop in the Monument area. With assistance from both the Colorado Springs Police Department and ICE, Marshals set up surveillance around the truck stop in Monument and eventually spotted Bagwell.

The Marshals Service said Bagwell was observed entering a ride-share vehicle that took him and another male to a location near Highway 105 and Peakview Blvd. At that location, he was taken into custody without incident.

Bagwell was booked into the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center and is awaiting extradition back to Austin, Texas.

The U.S. Marshalls Service said the arrest of this fugitive represents a culmination of extensive cooperative investigative efforts between the Austin Police Department, U.S. Marshals Lone Star Fugitive Task Force, U.S. Marshals Colorado Violent Offender Task Force, Colorado Springs Police Department, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
