Recent snowstorms delay pothole repairs

The recent spell of cold, snowy weather is hitting city streets and roads with a double whammy.

Streets Division Manager Corey Farkas said in addition to the normal freeze-thaw cycles that create potholes, the weather has limited crews’ ability to make substantial progress on repairs.

“This is the worst they’ve ever been and they’re getting worse,” Farkas said. “And we’re not getting an extra $2 million appropriation as we did last year.”

Farkas said crews hope they’ll soon see several days of warmer, drier weather.

Farkas said crews have filled 6,000 potholes, compared to 2,600 last season. He also said citizen complaints have nearly doubled from 500 to 900.

Potholes are expensive in more ways than one. A city spokesperson said that since Jan. 1, 84 people have filed complaints with the city about vehicles damaged by potholes, compared to 73 at the same point last year.

Farkas said his department will focus more on repaving streets and reduce the need for constant pothole repairs.
