Meteorological spring debuts after a wild winter

Over the last week, Willy’s Emporium in Old Colorado City has been a hot spot, thanks to our latest cold snap.

Hot tea is a hot commodity these days.

In the last three months, Colorado Springs and Pueblo have seen records for heat, cold and snow.

The weather wheel seems to spinning at warp speed. And people here have taken notice.

“Seventy degrees one day then hanging around in snow and ice,” said Pete Holdman.

All of the weather ups and downs have been part of a wild meteorological winter. So what is that?

Jill York said, “I do not know what that is,” not surprising since to most people spring debuts in late March.

Meteorologists define winter as the three coldest full months of the year. In the Northern Hemisphere that’s December, January and February.

There was certainly plenty of winter in Southern Colorado with plenty of snow. So what do the people that we talked to prefer?

Susan Holdman prefers spring.

“(The) budding trees, flowers, baby birds,” she said.

Her daughter Gemma has a different opinion. “I like winter, I like the snow. Especially fresh powder,” she said.

Others are willing to accept whatever Mother Nature offers.

Because they know we’ll be seeing a little bit of everything in the forecast in the months ahead.

Meteorological spring ends at the end of May.
