Names of Pueblo police officers involved in recent officer-involved shootings released

PUEBLO, Colo. (KRDO) -- Friday, the Pueblo Police Department released the names of the four officers involved in recent officer-involved shootings.

According to police, the department is releasing the names "due to requests to identify the officers involved in these incidents."

On June 26, 2022, police responded to an armed man along 6th Ave and 28th St. According to PPD, that individual was suicidal. The man died after he raised his weapon as police approached him. For that incident, Cpl. Richard Giconi was placed on administrative leave.

The man in that incident was later identified as Brett Chapman.

The second shooting happened after police were led on a chase through the city on June 28. According to PPD, officers were persuing suspects accused of stealing an ATM from a bank. At one point in the chase, the suspects pointed at least one firearm out the window and fired at officers.

According to police, one officer returned fire. That officer has been identified as Sergeant Richard Reyes. He has also been placed on administrative leave.

The third officer-involved shooting happened on June 29, near the Fountain Creek. According to police, when the two officers tried approaching the suspect, he fired rounds at their patrol car. The rounds shattered the passenger window, injuring one of the officers.

The officers returned fire, hitting the suspect. He was later identified as 66-year-old Mark Sales.

The department says Officer Sean Davis and Officer Jonathan Vicars were placed on administrative leave.

These shootings are being investigated by the Pueblo County Sheriff's office.

Wednesday, 13 Investigates spoke with Pueblo Police Chief Chris Noeller about the shootings. In addition to the four officers on administrative leave, Noeller said the department is down 27 patrol officers.
