Colorado Springs Police: Mother and boyfriend arrested for 5-year-old girl’s death
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Police say a woman and her boyfriend have been arrested in connection to the death of her young daughter.
On January 13, 2022, officers responded to an "urgent request for assistance" by the Colorado Springs Fire Department. According to police, CSFD was attempting life-saving measures on a 5-year-old girl.
The child was taken to a local hospital. The girl, identified as Emily Canales, succumbed to her injuries at the hospital. Officers notified the Crimes Against Children Unit after Canales died.
According to police, an extensive investigative process began after an autopsy was conducted. On June 14, 2022, her death was ruled a homicide. The El Paso County Coroner's Office listed the cause as "multiple blunt force injuries."
On June 28, 2022, detectives were granted arrest warrants for Canales' mother, 27-year-old Brianne Escamila, and 26-year-old Matthew Urias for Murder in the 1st Degree. According to police, Urias is Escamila's boyfriend.
CSPD's Violent Offender Fugitive Task Force took responsibility for finding and arresting Escamilla and Urias.
On June 29, 2022, Urias was taken into custody without incident.
After working with the U.S. Marshalls Service and the Littleton Police Department, Escamila was taken into custody on July 5, 2022, in Littleton.
At this time, police have only released the mugshot of Urias. CSPD says Escamilla's mugshot will be released "at a later time."
According to CSPD, Canales' death is the 26th homicide investigation in the City of Colorado Springs in 2022. At this time in 2021, CSPD investigated 21 homicides.
