Colorado Springs church vandalized several times

A Colorado Springs church is trying to stop vandals from causing any more damage on its property.

Someone damaged a Virgin Mary statue outside St. Andrew Kim Catholic Church several times over the past month.

“The initial vandalism was Oct. 12, and it just involved throwing something like a beer bottle at the statue and they just chipped it,” parishioner Terry Engler said.

The statue was damaged another four times since the first incident. Vandals punctured holes and eventually broke the statue into pieces.

The church captured some of the damage on surveillance video.

“There’s no reason for this. We might not find out who they are, but God knows who they are,” Engler said.

St. Andrew Kim staff reported the damage to Colorado Springs police.

Parishioners say the damage is upsetting.

“Somebody just attacking, not just one time, but repeatedly attacking the statue, it affects the parishioners,” Engler said. “We are quite upset about it.”

If you have any information about the vandalism, contact Colorado Springs police at 444-7000.
