Ft. Carson soldier found guilty of murder

A Fort Carson soldier will be sentenced Thursday after being found guilty of premeditated murder.

A panel found Sgt. Montrell Lamar Anderson Mayo guilty Wednesday night of killing his soldier-girlfriend Sgt. Kimberley Walker.

In closing arguments, prosecutors argued Mayo should be convicted of premeditated murder because he hit Walker three times and smothered her when he realized she was still alive.

The defense said Sgt. Mayo should be convicted of only manslaughter because he was in a “state of madness” when he and Sgt. Kimberly Walker quarreled and fought on Valentine’s Day 2013.

Mayo’s lawyers said prosecutors didn’t prove he meant to smother Walker and suggested her posture had cut off her air supply as she lay unconscious.

Sgt. Mayo faces up to life in prison.
