Could Colorado Springs experience another Waldo Canyon Fire?

KRDO

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- If the Waldo Canyon Fire happened today, the Colorado Springs Fire Chief says it likely would not have exploded into what it became.

Chief Randy Royal says aircraft and drones available now would better spot fires early on, which was an issue in Waldo Canyon.

Still, the chief cautions there are still plenty of areas in Colorado Springs left to burn, and another significant wildfire is still a possibility.

"We have a lot of forested areas that we need to continue to work on," explained Royal. "We do need to work on it with our mitigation and working with neighborhoods to do what we can and protect their homes."

For the last several weeks, the Colorado Springs Fire Department has held a Town Hall Series called "Living with Wildfire." CSFD says the series "aims to empower the community to be ready if a wildfire happens."

The Town Halls are held to inform residents about wildfires specific to the area of town they live in.
