Heavy rains strand drivers in Colorado

Northern Colorado got the brunt of heavy rains that flooded streets and stranded drivers up and down the Front Range.

The town of Windsor got 4 inches of rain Tuesday. Some people had to be rescued from their stranded cars while others walked through their flooded streets.

In the mountains, the rains triggered a mudslide that closed a portion of Interstate 70 near Wolcott. There were no major problems in the foothills hit hard by last September’s flooding.

Denver set a new record for the day with 1.8 inches of rain falling at its airport.

High and low pressure systems, combined with typical summer monsoon moisture, drew the abundant moisture to Colorado. More rain is forecast Wednesday but with only pockets of heavy accumulation.
