Colorado revenge porn bill shelved
A Colorado Republican lawmaker has shelved her proposal to criminalize the practice of so-called revenge pornography among minors.
Rep. Amy Stephens of Monument asked lawmakers Thursday to postpone her bill indefinitely. The bill would’ve made it a Class 5 felony for someone to publish explicit photos or videos of former romantic partners to humiliate them.
Critics of Stephens’ proposal say it duplicated existing child pornography laws.
Stephens says she spiked her proposal because of technical issues regarding the bill title. She says she plans to bring the proposal back later in the session, and that there are discussions to include offenses up to the age of 21, instead of only under 18.
Revenge porn has become a common enough problem that several state legislatures are debating the issue this year.
