Walsenburg teen out of jail on bond after arrested for alleged school threat

A 16-year-old is out of jail on bond after he was arrested for threatening multiple students at John Mall High School in Walsenburg.

One parent told KRDO NewsChannel 13 he is scared his son won’t be safe at school this week. His son, Evan Gonzalez, is a freshman at John Mall High School.

“I just thought it was crazy; like who would make a threat on the school?” said Gonzalez.

The teen was arrested on Thursday night for threatening to shoot students. Police say it first surfaced Feb. 5. Out of caution, the school district postponed a varsity basketball game on Feb. 8. Police closed the investigation on Feb. 10, not finding enough evidence, but new information given to investigators on Wednesday 2/2/14 led to the teen being arrested on a felony charge of inciting destruction of life or property.

“What’s this kid going to do now? You just don’t know. And with the way our Superintendent is, what is she going to do about it? How are we going to react to this situation? Nobody knows,” said parent Domnick Gonzalez.

Gonzalez had a thought to protect evan.

“Go back to the olden days, sit there with a gun and wait for him, and hopefully he don’t show up,” he said.

However, his son Evan doesn’t think the threat will be the big talker at school on Monday.

“I think the main topic we’re going to be talking about is the wrestlers at state,” said Gonzalez.

A neighbor on the other hand has grandchildren at Peakview School next to John Mall is on the same page as Evan’s dad.

“You don’t think much about it until it hits home, and then you get concerned. It can happen anywhere,” said Art Panter.

“You’re hoping that the superintendent is in control of everything and does her job, and to nip this in the butt,” said Gonzalez.

The school has held public meetings about the threat over the last couple weeks, but school leaders have not told KRDO NewsChannel 13 of any plans to increase security on monday.

The district attorney’s office will determine the next step for the teen who made the threat.
