Memorial Day 2021 marks first maskless holiday for most Americans in over a year
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- With more and more Americans getting vaccinated, this year’s memorial day looks a lot different than it did the last.
There are more people shopping and traveling. For most people, it’s their first maskless holiday in over a year. According to AAA, more than 37,000,000 people in the U.S. are expected to travel at least 50 miles from home this weekend.
With the reopening of the Vibes Baseball, and the grand opening of Weidner Field, more travelers are making their way to Colorado Springs.
More people traveling to the Pikes Peak region, means more people opening up their pocket books.
A local senior economist with Wells Fargo, Mark Vitner, believes people will spend four times what they might in a typical summer.
"The total savings from U.S. households built up 1.8 trillion dollars in excess savings of what it would have been otherwise," said Vitner.
Visit COS estimates that 2021 will bring in nearly $6,000,000 in local taxes through hotel and car rentals.
It’s a step forward, but still falls short to 2019 when the Springs raked in nearly $8,000,000 in taxes from travelers.
Some experts estimate it will another year for the tourism industry in Colorado Springs to bounce back.
