Dexting- A Cough Syrup High

What do cigarettes, adult magazines and cough syrup have in common?

If you are a teen you cannot buy them, in California anyway. It?s a new law there aimed at curbing cough syrup abuse.

Because California?s latest move local lawmakers may soon begin asking their own questions, but unless a change is made state level, a cheap and dangerous high, is as close as the corner drugstore.

They aren’t shy about it. Teens chugging what many think is a harmless on YouTube. Cough medications like Nyquil, Robitussin-dm or Mucinex-dm.

It?s popular trend for some teens. The goal is to get high off of a chemical called dextromethorphan, also known as DXM.

In large doses DXM can cause hallucinogenic effects…but it can also cause death.

There are currently no laws in Colorado that prohibit teens from buying cough syrup.

Colorado Representative Mark Barker and State Senator John Morse said they don’t expect this issue to come up in the upcoming Colorado session.

For reference, act of downing cough syrup to get high is also know as, dexting, skittling and robotripping.
