Sober Drivers Proposal

A 92-year-old Southern Colorado man is behind a potential first in the nation that aims to keep our roads safer. Swede Hanson is pushing for a parent and underage driver to sign a statement that says the child didn’t use illegal drugs or alcohol during the previous year. This statement is a condition for the underage driver to get an instruction permit or minor driver’s license.

Hanson has experience in the field of adolescent drug and alcohol abuse treatment. He told me from his home, “I’m getting old. I want to make a difference. I wants to do something for these kids.” Hanson also believes this kind of legislation is a first for parents, too. He believes this will give them more leverage or a club as he calls to slow down the behaviors of some unruly children.

El Paso County State Senator, John Morse is proposing this legislation in January. We will follow its way through the state legislature.
