Colorado Rep. to preside over House impeachment hearing
WASHINGTON, D.C. (KRDO) - U.S. Representative Diana DeGette has been asked to serve as speaker pro tempore and preside over the House of Representatives for Wednesday's debate on impeaching President Donald Trump.
Rep. DeGette is a Democrat and represents the First District, which includes parts of Denver. In a statement posted on her Web site, she provided this comment:
"I am honored that the speaker has asked me to serve as speaker pro tempore of the House and to preside over most of the impeachment debate. None of us came to Congress to impeach a president, but every one of us – when we assumed office – took an oath to uphold the constitution. This is a sad and somber moment in our nation's history and the responsibility to preside over this important debate is something I will not take lightly."
Democrats will bring abuse and obstruction charges against President Trump to a vote of the full House. That would make the 45th president only the third in U.S. history to be impeached.
