Winter storm taking aim at Colorado

Winter Storm Warnings and Advisories are active for all of central/southern Colorado Sunday through Monday night. Event details will follow the snowfall totals forecast.

Colorado Springs: 4-8"

Denver: 4-8"

Monument: 6-10"

Woodland Park: 6-10"

Pueblo: 4-8"

Canon City: 5-10"

Salida: 6-10"

Walsenburg: 6-12"

Alamosa: 5-10"

Trinidad: 5-10"

Springfield: 2-5"

Lamar: 2-5"

A strong cold front will move south through central/eastern Colorado overnight tonight bringing freezing temperatures and low clouds to the region. It'll be possible to experience freezing drizzle across the eastern plains making for slick road conditions Sunday morning.

Along the I-25 corridor, overcast skies and temperatures in the 20s with a few scattered flurries are likely Sunday morning. Continued cooling through the midday with temperatures into the teens during the afternoon. Wind gusts during this time will reach 30-40mph, making for wind chill values to approach zero degrees. Periods of moderate to heavy snowfall will begin after 3pm for central/southern Colorado and last into Monday afternoon. During this time period, snowbanding is likely, making for a wide range of snowfall accumulation possibilities. Meaning the snow accumulation forecast will be an evolving forecast based on where the snowbands actually set up. Regardless, travel will be impacted as icy and/or snow-covered roads are a sure bet. Be sure to take the proper precautions to deal with winter driving conditions.

Now lets address temperatures a bit further, it's getting cold. Sunday night to 6 degrees in Colorado Springs with wind chills hitting close to 15 degrees below zero, making frostbite possible in less than 30 minutes. Similar temperatures are forecast for Monday night. Low temperature records sit at 15 degrees Sunday, and 17 degrees Monday for Colorado Springs. So I'd expect a plethora of temperature records to be shattered in southern Colorado in the coming days.
