EPC Sheriff’s Office gives Fourth of July fireworks restriction reminder
EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) -- With Independence Day fast approaching amid an already active wildfire season, the El Paso County Sheriff's Office is reminding everyone of fireworks restrictions.
Unincorporated El Paso County is currently under Stage 1 Fire Restrictions because of the ongoing hot and dry weather conditions can make fireworks all the more dangerous.
The sheriff's office said in a press release sent to KRDO Sunday that it is reminding citizens that the sale, use or possession of any firework is illegal.
Illegal products include:
- Bottle rockets
- Firecrackers of any type
- Mortars
- Roman candles
- Fountains
- Ground spinners
- Smoke Bombs
- Sparklers
Anyone who violates these laws could face a fine up to $750 and/or six months of jail time. In the city of Colorado Springs, violators could face a fine up to $2,500.
The sheriff's office provided the following fireworks safety information:
- If you want to see fireworks, go to a public show put on by experts.
- Do not use consumer fireworks.
- Keep a close eye on children at events where fireworks are used.
- The risk of fireworks injury is highest for young people ages 15-24, followed by children under 10.
- Nationwide, more than 16,000 reported fires are started by fireworks annually.
If someone has any issues with other residents selling or using fireworks the sheriff's office says to call its non-emergency number at 719-390-5555. Do not call 911.
