Protesters gather at Pueblo Riverwalk Monday night

PUEBLO, Colo. (KRDO) - Hundreds of people came together Monday night for a peaceful protest against police brutality in honor of George Floyd, the man who was killed in Minneapolis.

The protest started around 7 p.m. at the Carriage House, where one organizer made a speech asking the crowd to refrain from violence, saying in part, "We don’t want our black brothers and sisters here tonight to be any targets for an easy arrest."

Protesters later walked along the Riverwalk, and eventually made their way back to the Carriage House and dispersed. Some protesters headed over to the police station, but remained peaceful.

Pueblo Police Chief Troy Davenport and other officers were seen marching with protesters along the Riverwalk.

Pueblo Police Department posted a video on Youtube Monday denouncing the prolonged suffocation of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer who has since been charged for his death.

"When I first saw the video involving the Minneapolis police officer engaged with Mr. Floyd, I was appalled. And, frankly for a period of time, without words," Chief Davenport said in the video.

Chief Davenport said, after he saw the video of what happened to Floyd, he talked to his officers and sent out an educational video specific to handling the situation portrayed.
