Parts of Greenway Trail in Monument Valley Park will be temporarily closed starting Monday

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Construction on the Cache La Poudre/Mesa Road Bridge will cause parts of the Gateway Trail to be closed for up to four weeks.

According to officials, construction that is set to take place on the Cache La Poudre/Mesa Road Bridge will require the trail to close for up to four weeks. The city says that closure will start on Monday, October 12.

The city says it has to close the area so that a crane can lift concrete deck panels into place on the bridge. There will be barricades on the trail at the Duck Pond north of the bridge, and at the pickleball courts south of the bridge.

Greenway Trail's section along Monument Valley Park are heavily used by cyclists and walkers. The construction will essentially cut the trail in half.

Despite the barriers, residents are still going to find ways to go on their daily routine and bike rides.

"We've been coming to this trail for years," Stacy Reddish said. "We will find a way to walk around it to get around to the sides of the trail that are still going to be open."

The city says those coming from southbound parts of the trail should cross Monument Creek via the Uintah Street bridge to get to the eastern part of the trail. Those coming from northbound should cross Monument Creek at the pedestrian bridge to use eastern parts of the trail, according to officials.

People who want to use the pickleball courts can enter by car via Glen Avenue and park in the lot west of the bridge. Those who want to visit the Horticultural Art Society Demonstration Gardens can enter the same way.

More information on the bridge construction, which started in April, is available on the city's website.
