Multiple shots fired at car in Pueblo intersection with infant inside
PUEBLO, Colo. (KRDO) -- A family is left scared and without a car after they say they were shot at multiple times with their five-month-old son in the vehicle.
The Pueblo Police Department (PPD) said this happened around 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 14, at the intersection of West 4th Street and Court Street in downtown Pueblo.
Dakotah Richardson was driving home from the park when she was at a stoplight with her boyfriend in the passenger seat and her infant in the back seat. Richardson said the car in front of them was swerving, and a man was hanging out of the passenger-side window.
“He gets back into the vehicle, and then he comes back out with a gun and just points it at our windshield and starts shooting,” Richardson said.
Suddenly, she found herself ducking from gunshots and driving away as fast as she could.
In that moment, Richardson said she feared for her baby’s life.
"I just pulled off and ran out of the car to check on him, and he was fine, luckily,” Richardson said.
She said multiple shots hit her car, including some that hit the windshield, hood and gas tank.
“We noticed our car was smelling really bad, and there was gas leaking everywhere,” Richardson said. “We have to get him diapers and wipes, so it makes it really difficult, especially nowadays, living paycheck to paycheck," Richardson said.
The family has since started a fundraiser to help pay for a new car.
PPD says this is an ongoing investigation, and they have information on a suspect. Police say current evidence does not lead them to believe that this was a road rage incident.
PPD also say the shots hit a business on the 300 block of West 4th Street. KRDO13 spoke with an employee at the business, who said that, luckily, their store was closed at the time.
