2 dead after small plane crash near Telluride, sheriff’s office says

SAN MIGUEL COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) -- Two people were killed after a small plane crash near Dolores Peak on Thursday afternoon, the sheriff's office said.

The San Miguel County Sheriff's Office (SMCSO) said a Cessna 206 single-engine plane went missing just before 3:45 p.m. after someone reported seeing smoke near Dolores Peak -- a 13,296-foot mountain about 15 miles southwest of Telluride.

The sheriff's office said the plane had taken off from Grand Junction after refueling and was "conducting survey and mapping operations" at the time of the crash. SMCSO said a Search and Rescue team determined there were no survivors after searching the crash scene Thursday.

The people on the plane have been identified only as "two male occupants."

The sheriff's office also said Search and Rescue would return Friday to continue looking for the bodies of the two people who died in the crash.

SMCSO said the National Transportation Safety Board would conduct the incident investigation.
