Video captures bear walking into family’s kitchen in Broadmoor neighborhood

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- A KRDO13 viewer was in for an early morning surprise when she and her family discovered a bear had walked into their kitchen in the Broadmoor area.

It started off like any other day when Nerissa England was getting her kids ready in the morning.The England-Lee family often opens up their doors and windows in the morning to let the breeze into their home.

“I was in the bathroom with my daughter doing her hair, and we heard a loud bang," England said.

It wasn't her siblings or dad causing the ruckus, so 8-year-old Zara Lee ran down the stairs to see what had happened. What she would find was much bigger and furrier.

“The bear was just laying down outside eating all the trash... He was trying to rip open one of our milk bottles,” Lee said.

The bear tried to snatch some vitamins off the table and dragged the kitchen trash can out the back door. The dad quickly shooed the bear away and shut the door.

The whole ordeal was all captured on their home surveillance camera.

“We’re all kind of shocked that we actually captured him on camera enjoying his breakfast in our kitchen,” England said.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) said this time of year is when bears spend up to 20 hours a day searching for food and eating before hibernating for the winter. CPW said they have seen record bear activity with the wildfires and drought in the southern Colorado region.

CPW is strongly encouraging people not to feed or approach bears and to secure all garbage.

“We’re still going to leave our trash can in our kitchen. We’re still going to leave our door open, but we might just wait a few days before we open it for a long time,” England said.
