Colorado health officials warn of toxic algae danger to humans and pets

STATEWIDE, Colo. (KRDO) -- The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) is urging people to check water conditions for signs of toxic algae before getting in or letting pets near it.

According to officials, the algae can grow quickly in warm, slow-moving or still water and can be harmful to humans and fatal to pets. CDPHE says the algae can look like "spilled paint or pea soup" on the surface of water, and can be a variety of colors from blue-green to gold or red.

If people are exposed to the algae, they may see skin irritation or rashes. It could also cause nausea, muscle pain, fever, headaches or a sore throat, according to CDPHE. Officials are telling people who believe they may have been in contact with the algae to shower or rinse with fresh water immediately and contact a healthcare provider.

As for pets, CDPHE says if a person believes their pet has been exposed after drinking water, they should keep the pet from licking its fur or paws until they are cleaned, rinse the pet as soon as possible and remove the algae from them. They should also watch for symptoms like drooling, stumbling and vomiting and contact a vet as soon as possible if a pet shows any of these symptoms.

Officials say to help keep the algae out of Colorado waters, people should make sure to clean up after themselves and properly dispose of pet waste. They also recommend not over-fertilizing any lawns or landscaping.
