$5,000 reward offered in theft of 138 firearms from trailer in Colorado Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the recovery of more than 120 guns stolen in Colorado Springs. The theft occurred March 27 from a locked U-Haul trailer near the Colorado Springs Airport.

Federal investigators report the firearms were taken from a U-Haul trailer that was parked at the Hampton Inn on Aerotech Drive. The owner of the stolen guns has been identified as Scott Hoppa and the stolen property is valued at over $108,000. 42-year-old Eric Vasquez has been arrested in connection with the theft of 138 guns.

Hoppa saw someone breaking into the U-Haul van, then he and his daughter went outside to confront the person, but they realized there was more than one suspect. Hoppa's daughter reportedly fired shots at the suspects as they left the area with the firearms.

As a result of that shooting, Hoppa and his daughter are facing charges for prohibited use of a weapon and reckless endangerment. Hoppa stated that he and his daughter were trying to keep guns off the street. "If someone's stealing guns, they're probably not selling them to law-abiding citizens," Hoppa said.

Documents obtained by KRDO13 describe Vasquez as a "prolific offender," and mention 32 criminal incidents since December 2025.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives continues to offer a $5,000 reward for information about the stolen guns.
