Derek Greer laid to rest on Saturday

Funeral services were held Saturday at Angelus Chapel in Colorado Springs for Derek Greer, 15, who was killed alongside Natalie Partida, 16, nearly two weeks ago.

Greer would have finished up his freshman year at Coronado High School this spring. Many of his classmates came out to celebrate his life and remember him.

"He was a warm-hearted caring kid who always just doing everything for everybody else except for him," said Mason Johnson, a friend of Greer's.

Fifteen doves were released Saturday afternoon in honor of each year Greer was alive.

"It's time for change," said Joseph Rhoades, who was good friends with Greer. "It's time to better ourselves for who we are and it's just time to actually make comfort and peace with ourselves in order to do so.

News of four additional suspects who were arrested in connection with the murders of Greer and his friend, Partida, provided little solace for many in attendance on Saturday, but it did comfort those who were close to Greer.

"It gave me some comfort knowing that they ain't out there doing any more harm," said Rhoades.

As hundreds gathered to release balloons into a gray Colorado Springs sky the impact of Greer's life was evident by the sheer number of people in attendance.
