Colorado voters encouraged to choose party affiliation by Feb. 3

DENVER, Colo. (KRDO) -- The deadline to add or change a party affiliation before the primary election in Colorado is now just one week away.

El Paso County released information Monday to help voters understand their options and the consequences.

Voters are not required to choose a party to participate in the primary. However, choosing a party allows the El Paso County Clerk's Office to spend less money producing and mailing ballots.

If a voter chooses to affiliate with one party, that person will only receive a ballot for that party's primary.

If a voter does not affiliate with one party, that person will receive ballots for both parties' primary. In that situation, a voter should only fill out and return a single ballot. Filling out and returning both ballots will disqualify both votes.

The Colorado Presidential Primary is March 3.
