Homicide investigation underway after man found dead in southeast Colorado Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) – Colorado Springs Police are now on the lookout for a suspect involved in an apparent overnight shooting that left one man dead.

According to the CSPD, police first received reports of gunfire in an industrial area on Durango Drive -- between Delta Drive and Hancock Expressway -- at around 3:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

When officers arrived on scene, they discovered a man with an apparent gunshot wound; he was pronounced dead on scene.

The El Paso County Coroner's Office claimed the body just before noon Tuesday and will perform an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death.

Police found the body in what appeared to be a salvage yard full of several dozen wrecked vehicles.

According to the CSPD, investigators believe this to be an isolated incident; there is currently no suspect in custody or identified and police are now interviewing witnesses and developing potential suspect information.

Police also want to obtain any surveillance video from neighboring businesses that have cameras; at least six parking lots were closed off for the investigation.

"Just based on the initial information that we're gathering, it seems like this was a meet-up of some kind," said Ira Cronin, a CSPD spokesman. "Now, exactly what that was about, that's part of our ongoing investigation and we want to confirm all of that information before we release any of it publicly."

Durango Drive is expected to be closed until sometime Tuesday afternoon while officers investigate the scene.

Late Tuesday morning, several people gathered just beyond the crime scene -- fearing that the victim is someone they knew.

"We think it could be him because he hasn't answered phone messages or responded to texts," a woman explained. "I don't want to say more until I know for sure."

A man who was among those who gathered, said it's "just a feeling" that the victim was a friend of his.
