NB I-25 to see overnight closures due to Powers Interchange Project
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Overnight on Tuesday, Northbound I-25 traffic will move onto a new detour pavement which was recently placed in the median.
This new temporary lane configuration will be in place until the summer of this year. According to a press release, the hope is that this will provide Wildcat Construction enough room to build two new bridges along with off-ramps for the new powers interchange.
William Restrepo said, “If it speeds up the process, I’m all for it. Right now I’m just not too excited about all the slow progress it is taking to get there.”
While John Daughty added, “Anything that’s going to relieve congestion I think is a plus.”
Construction for the detour will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday with northbound I-25 being reduced to two lanes. Then at 9 p.m., the two lanes will go down to just one open lane.
All three lanes are set to reopen by 6 a.m. Wednesday and will be in the new configuration.
However, the good news with this project is that there is a lot of room on the median. So other than the lane closures for the configuration, traffic shouldn’t be too terribly impacted during construction.
Restrepo said, “I go to Denver quite often and I take this route so I would be happy, if it gave me like 20 minutes less in a day I’d be all for it.”
The $65 million privately financed project is expected to be fully completed in the spring of 2021. With the completion of the project, you will see a new full-access interchange south of the existing I-25 and north gate boulevard.
And something to keep in mind, during construction, the speed limit is reduced to 65.
