Colorado Springs man arrested for fatal shooting recorded on victim’s phone
UPDATE 9: 30pm
Late Friday evening, Colorado Springs police announced that James Hanlon had turned himself into police in Denver.
PREVIOUS STORY:
On Friday, KRDO obtained documents detailing the fatal shooting of a man near UCCS Wednesday night.
Police officers were called to the 1900 block of Rimwood Dr. around 6:25 pm and found 63-year-old Gary Dolce dead outside his home. Dolce had multiple gunshot wounds.
One of the first responders on the scene discovered a cellphone next to Dolce, he then realized the phone was recording a video and stopped the recording.
Authorities played the video back, which had recorded Dolce’s death.
In the video, a man who was later identified as 53-year-old James W Hanlon is seen in a car with his window down confronting Dolce. Hanlon says something to the effect of ” you *explicit* idiot ” then fires a handgun approximately four times.
After further investigation, it was revealed that Hanlon and Dolce both lived on Rimwood Dr. and had an altercation in the past, in which a report was filed.
According to court documents, Dolce and Hanlon shared a fence and Hanlon was cited by the Humane Society for having an aggressive animal. In an audio recording obtained by the Humane Society, Hanlon and the Humane Society employee can be heard going back and forth about restraining animals and having a dangerous dog.
Hanlon talks about a shared fence with a neighbor, presumably Dolce, and can be heard stating, ” We’re just going to kick his *explicit*, that’s all we’re gonna do. Next time I see him I’ll just kick his *explicit*… I guarantee you once he gets his *explicit* kicked, that will be the end of it. ”
While speaking with Hanlon’s family, police learned that shortly after receiving the Humane Society ticket, Hanlon told them he had an emergency work callout and left the home. Hanlon was served the Humane Society ticket at 5:38 p.m. and the shooting was reported at 6:24 p.m. the same day.
Surveillance video in the area shows a vehicle matching the one owned by Hanlon. The suspect vehicle was driving towards the scene of the shooting at 6:22 p.m. The vehicle also matches the description of the vehicle seen on Dolce’s cellphone video.
Police say Hanlon is considered armed and dangerous and as of Friday afternoon, police say Hanlon may have fled the state.
Hanlon is described as white, 5’11” , 180 pounds , brown hair, and blue eyes.
CSPD says Hanlon might be in a 2018 Toyota 4Runner (pictured below) with the CO license plate CCW619 .
If you know of Hanlon’s whereabouts contact your local law enforcement agency.
KRDO will continue to bring updates on this developing story.
