Crews clear out largest homeless camp in Colorado Springs

One of the largest homeless camps in Colorado Springs, known as the “Quarry,” has officially been shut down.

Drone footage shows just how big this camp had gotten, with more than 150 people living in the Quarry East of Downtown Colorado Springs.

Lt. Mike Lux with CSPD said, “I’ve been with the Colorado Springs Police Department for over 30 years. and this camp here is probably the largest camp we’ve seen in the city.”

A couple of weeks ago campers received an eviction notice. The notice states that the camp will be cleaned on December 11 and campers must leave or face fines in violation of the city’s anti-camping ordinance.

“We posted it 14 days ago and I think we have 70, 75 people still resistant to leave,” said Lux.

Because of the camp being shut down, campers who have lived here for months are now left with finding a new place to live.

One camper said, “There is nowhere to go where they won’t run us off in a week or two.

While another added, “This is devastating, this is sad but we all have to move on.”

However, Lux says there are plenty of options.

“It’s disappointing — if we didn’t have the available resources that we have, it’d almost be understandable. There came a time and there is still a time where people can’t afford housing in Colorado Springs,” Lux said. “We have shelters in place that people can go and live a normal and healthy lifestyle.”

Lux’s statement comes on a day that the Springs Rescue Mission opened up 150 more shelter beds.

When it’s all said and done, Lux said they will fill more than 10 dumpsters of trash while cleaning out the Quarry.
