Latest Poll: Polis leads in Colorado gubernatorial race

The midterm election is less than 40 days away and the first public gubernatorial poll concludes that Democrat Jared Polis is leading over Republican Walker Stapleton.

The poll was commissioned by Healthier Colorado. They asked 600 likely voters who they are going to vote for Colorado governor. Forty-seven percent of people said Polis, and another 40 percent saying Stapleton.

Polis was favored by women, people under the age of 55, and people who earn less than $75,000 per year. For Stapleton, it was the opposite. He was favored by men, people over the age of 55, and those who make more than $75,000 per year.

In the final stretch of the election, these candidates will be pouring more money into their campaigns. The Stapleton campaign has spent a little more than $2 million dollars of their own money and has received about $12 million from outside groups.

In an interview back in August, Polis addressed the outside money, “We’ll never have as much money as all the dark outside money.”

Polis added that Stapleton has put a lot of his own money into the campaign, however, the Democratic gubernatorial nominee has put in way more of his own money in than Stapleton.

Since Polis first announced he was running back in 2017, he has spent more than $18 million. Stapleton spoke with KRDO back in August as well, and he says that his opponent is trying to buy the election.

“I don’t think that’s going to sit well with Coloradans,” Stapleton says, “Jared Polis has dumped millions of dollars of his own personal wealth that he has run in Colorado.”

Campaign spending is expected to be one of the topics discussed in the upcoming debate between the two candidates on October 8th at CSU-Pueblo.
