Colorado Springs Police investigating deadly shooting outside El Paso County Courthouse

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) - Colorado Springs Police are investigating a shooting outside the El Paso County Courthouse that resulted in one person dead.

In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, a body was visible on the sidewalk outside the courthouse. Officers with the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) set up black screens to block visibility, but the shooting happened directly in front of the El Paso County Courthouse on Tejon Street.

At 10:03 a.m. Thursday, CSPD said their officers responded to a shots fired call outside the courthouse. When officers arrived on scene they found one victim dead from an apparent gunshot wound. CSPD says that no other people were shot but two people are being treated for minor injuries.

CSPD confirmed that the suspect is now in custody, but the identity of the suspect is unclear at this time.

CSPD’s investigation has determined there was a previous relationship between the shooter and the victim. The context of that relationship is still under investigation currently.

The El Paso County Sheriff's Office (EPSO) says the courthouse is closed for the day as CSPD conducts its investigation.

According to CSPD, they are the lead agency for all activity that happened outside of the courthouse, and EPSO is the lead agency for everything that happened inside the courthouse.

CSPD is conducting this case as a homicide investigation, and they believe this is an active investigation.

CSPD said this was not an active shooter situation, and there is no threat to the public.
