Colorado Springs man killed by Douglas County deputies after pointing gun at them

The man killed by deputies in Douglas County last month after pointing a gun at them during a traffic stop was from Colorado Springs and had multiple warrants for his arrest.

New information was released Monday about the shooting that took place on Aug. 31 at Highway 85 and Delva Road.

According to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, a pickup truck made an unsafe turn in front of deputies just north of Delva Road. That’s when the deputies pulled the pickup truck over.

Four people — two men and two women — were inside the pickup truck and three of them were cooperative with the deputies, according to the report. A man in the rear passenger seat wouldn’t give his name and wasn’t cooperative with the deputies.

The deputies asked that man, identified as 61-year-old Paul Askins of Colorado Springs, to step out of the vehicle.

Askins got out of the truck with a pistol pointed at the deputies, according to the report, and he kept advancing toward them. The two deputies then opened fire and shot Askins multiple times, killing him. ( PHOTOS )

No deputies were reported injured in the incident.

It’s not clear if the other occupants face any charges. According to the report, Askins had a protection order against one of the women in the truck. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office says no one else in the car beside Askins had a warrant for their arrest.

We spoke exclusively to Summer Lindsay, Askins daughter about her father. She says he was a very loving and caring man. “My son worshipped him, I loved him, so many people loved him,” Lindsay says. She told us she watched the body camera video herself wanting to see her dad’s last moments alive. Lindsay says the way he acted in the video was not the man she and her family knew. “I’m not denying that my dad has had problems with the law,” Lindsay says, “but I just never saw him that way. He wasn’t a monster.”

Lindsay now hopes that her father will not be remembered as the man you see in the video, but as a man who cared deeply for his family.

The shooting is still under investigation.
