25-year-old bicyclist killed in crash in south Colorado Springs

A bicyclist was killed after being struck by a car Wednesday night in south Colorado Springs, and police are looking for another “vehicle of interest” connected to the crash.

It happened at about 9:30 p.m. near the intersection of S. Academy and Fountain boulevards. Colorado Springs police say 25-year-old Stetson Hogue was in the middle lane of the road facing west when a Lexus traveling north struck him.

Police said on Sept. 11 that Hogue wasn’t wearing reflective clothing or a protective helmet and didn’t have any lights on his bicycle while trying to cross Academy in an unlit area.

Hogue was taken to the hospital but later died from his injuries.

The driver and the passenger of the Lexus sedan were both uninjured. Police said no charges are anticipated. The crash is still under investigation, but drugs, alcohol, and speed aren’t considered factors.

The Colorado Springs Police Department says officers are looking for a “vehicle of interest” that was in the area at the time of the crash. The vehicle is described as a tan or light-colored pickup truck with a camper shell.

CSPD previously told KRDO that Hogue was potentially struck by two vehicles. A news release sent Thursday afternoon didn’t clarify if the “vehicle of interest” also struck Hogue.

Hogue’s Facebook profile says he is a former combat engineer in the U.S. Army, and several of his pictures show him in an Army uniform.

If you have any information about the crash, call CSPD at 719-444-7000.
