No cause yet after March’s fatal construction fire in Denver

Investigators haven’t been able to determine what started a fatal construction fire in Denver and are asking the public for possible tips to help them pinpoint the cause.

Denver Fire Department spokesman Capt. Greg Pixley said Wednesday that some possible causes of the March fire have been ruled out, including temporary electrical power units and cords and workers from a half dozen trades. He said workers from other trades working at the site haven’t been completely ruled out yet but aren’t suspected of starting the fire.

The bodies of two workers were found at the site of what was to be a five-story apartment and retail building near downtown.

Firefighters are also still investigating what caused an overnight fire that destroyed townhomes under construction in May in another part of the city.

Denver fire officials say the second person who was unaccounted for after Wednesday’s massive fire was found dead Thursday afternoon.

The Denver Fire Department didn’t release the names of either of the two people who were killed in the blaze.

Investigators are still working on determining the cause of the blaze, which engulfed a construction site and forced several construction workers to jump from the second and third stories. Denver7 reported that the site passed an inspection as recently as Monday.

Officials say one person has died, at least six people were injured, and crews are still looking for another person in a fire that broke out near downtown Denver on Wednesday.

There were around 50 construction workers inside the building at the time of the fire. One of them was found dead in the ashes of the fire. The search continues for one other person.

Four people were treated for smoke inhalation, a Denver firefighter was treated for burns, and another person was taken to Denver Health with critical injuries.

No identities have been released.

Firefighters responded to the three-alarm fire that broke out around noon Wednesday north of Capitol Hill in Denver.

Flames shot up at a construction site near 18th Ave. and N. Emerson Street and thick smoke was billowing into the air.

Firefighters worked for hours to extinguish the blaze. Our affiliates at Denver7 report that a few nearby buildings and vehicles were damaged.

Flames started to subside by about 1 p.m. as a deluge of water from the Denver Fire Department’s hoses covered the building.
