Ex-Colorado prison officer pleads guilty to smuggling drugs
A former correctional officer in southern Colorado has acknowledged smuggling drugs into a medium security prison for an inmate with whom she was romantically involved.
The Pueblo Chieftain reports 25-year-old Sarah James pleaded guilty Monday to a misdemeanor charge of possession of contraband. She is scheduled to be sentenced July 30.
Investigators say James acknowledged bringing two packages of methamphetamine hidden inside her lunchbox to the Fremont Correctional Facility in December. The lunchbox also contained a love letter from the inmate.
An affidavit says James told investigators it was her third time smuggling contraband into the prison and that she was paid $2,000 in cash each time. She resigned after the discovery.
