Pueblo County patrol deputies get new body cameras, Tasers

Patrol deputies and investigators with the Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office are now able to record their interactions with the public with new body cameras.

The sheriff’s office announced Monday that 82 Axon body cameras were purchased, and the specific model is also connected to the deputies’ 82 new Taser devices. Whenever the Taser is switched on, the body camera will automatically activate.

The cameras have been used since mid-April and can store up to three days’ worth of video. They have a battery life of about 12 hours.

But it’s not clear if the cameras will automatically record every interaction with the public. The sheriff’s office stated the cameras “can activate the cameras prior to making contact” and that the cameras will “allow” deputies to record contact.

The county is providing $257,619 across three years fro the project, and the U.S. Department of Justice is contributing $212,736 over two years.
