Bear protects cubs from coyotes at Garden of the Gods
A man walking near Garden of the Gods came across an unexpected sight Wednesday, a bear protecting her two cubs from a pack of coyotes.
Randy Reynolds has lived in Colorado Springs for several years now. Seeing bears is not a foreign concept for him.
“I’ve seen two this summer already,” he says.
However Wednesday, Reynolds took to Mesa Overlook near Garden of the Gods to look for another common animal, horned sheep.
Minutes later he looked over towards a wooded area near the trail off 30th Street and saw bears pop out from behind the bushes.
But that’s not it, standing from the overlook Randy Reynolds also saw a pack of coyotes attacking the bears, right next to the hiking trail.
“It was pretty surreal. First time I had ever seen anything like that in the wild. I know it’s natural for them to do that. The coyotes were trying to separate the baby from the momma so they could attack the baby,” Reynolds said.
He wasn’t able to take photos or video but says he has learned his lesson.
“I want to keep my phone charged so I can take video the next time I see it,” said.
According to the folks at Garden of the Gods, that kind of thing isn’t common at the park but both species are.
