Parole Officer killed in Colorado Springs identified as Ofc. Christine Guerin Sandoval
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) - Officials identified the Community Parole Officer killed in a hit-and-run while trying to serve an arrest warrant as Christine Guerin Sandoval.
During a press conference Friday afternoon, investigators revealed what led up to Ofc. Guerin Sandoval's death.
The Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD), first received reports of an auto-pedestrian crash at the intersection of N. Spruce St. and East Bijou St. at 3:49 p.m.
Police learned three parol officers, including Ofc. Guerin Sandoval, were trying to serve a warrant to a suspect who was in the parking of a business at that intersection.
While trying to contact the suspect, he hit two of the three parole officers and then fled the scene. A convenience store clerk told KRDO he witnessed the suspect back up his SUV into the parole officers before speeding off.
Ofc. Guerin Sandoval was taken to a hospital where she ultimately died from injuries she sustained from being hit. The second parole officer was treated and released Thursday night. Her identity has not been released at this time.
Kula managed to flee the scene before other officers responded and a Blue Alert was activated. He was eventually found and taken into custody. KRDO learned Kula has a lengthy criminal history including a previous conviction for assaulting a police officer.
CSPD is working to get an arrest warrant for several charges including manslaughter, leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, and third-degree assault on a peace officer.
Fourth Judicial District Attorney Michael Allen said at the press conference they're reviewing the charges as the investigation moves forward.

The Southern Colorado Law Enforcement Foundation is raising money to help Ofc. Guerin Sandoval's family and the other parole officer injured.

When donating, people are asked to specify which officer or just put "parole." By saying parole, the donation will be divided evenly.
As of Wednesday evening, Oct. 4, a GoFundMe account with a goal of raising $10,000 for the officer's family had collected more that $14,500 from 173 donors.
