Colorado man found sleeping in vehicle arrested with stolen gun

A man found asleep in a vehicle was arrested on Monday morning with a weapon reported stolen out of Pueblo.

David Roy Cole, 32, from Salida has been booked into the Pueblo County Jail for possession of a handgun by a previous offender, criminal impersonation, and theft.

A Pueblo County Sheriff’s sergeant was patrolling U.S. 50 West, just east of Pueblo Boulevard, at around 2:25 a.m. when he spotted a 1991 Honda Accord on the side of the road with hazard lights on.

The Sgt. pulled over and approached the vehicle. Inside was a man, later identified as Cole, slumped over the steering wheel asleep. The deputy noticed that the ignition on the Honda was altered, so he called for backup.

Once more deputies had arrived, they placed their vehicles around the Honda so that Cole couldn’t escape. Cole eventually woke up and was put in handcuffs.

When deputies asked for ID and proof of ownership of the vehicle, Cole told them he didn’t have either and also gave them a fake name.

Further investigation showed that the vehicle was registered out of Buena Vista, and Cole was also wanted on a warrant from Chafee County.

A weapon reported stolen out of Pueblo was recovered between the driver seat and center console of the Honda while it was towed.
