Chauncy Johnson

District 17 - Democratic Party

How does your experience make you qualified to represent the people?

I'm qualified to represent the people because I've spent nearly three years working inside the Colorado General Assembly- interacting with drafting legislation, managing constituents' casework, and learning how to get things done for people. I know how the process works because I have lived it from the inside. But more than that-I'm from this community. I was raised in Colorado Springs, I organized here, and I've already proven I can win for southeast Colorado Springs when the odds are against me. I helped lead a grassroots campaign that defeated a 4:1 funded ballot measure in 2A (police training academy) here in El Paso County. I'm not coming to the legislature to learn. I'm coming to fight for every family in HD17-and I'm ready on day one.

What are your top policy priorities?

My top policy priorities would be economic relief, housing for all, and reliable transportation. We want to bring relief by creating a statewide or regional guaranteed income pilot for low-income families, gig workers, or new parents. Fight for housing for all by a state-level public developer or social housing authority to construct mixed-income, permanently affordable housing owned by public or non-profit entities. Finally transportation & climate by a package of laws investing in: Transit-oriented development, Bus rapid transit (BRT) expansion. Electric school and city buses. Walkable/bikeable infrastructure in low-income neighborhoods.

What is one issue you think is being overlooked in this race, and how would you address it?

One issue I think is being overlooked in this race is healthcare, and when I say that I mean more resources for individuals that need us most. I would address this by working with my state delegation, the county, and federal delegations to bring a hospital to the southeast, as Memorial Central Hospital is the only hospital in proximity to most people in the southeast.
