COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office says there was a medical emergency in a male housing ward at the El Paso County Jail. It happened early Sunday morning on May 9th around 12:45am.

A male was found in his cell unresponsive and not breathing.  EPCSO says life saving measures were immediately started and continued until AMR and Fire personnel arrived and took over.

However, despite the life saving measures, the inmate passed way. At this point there is no indication the death is related to COVID-19.

The identity of the inmate and cause of death will be released upon the conclusion of the autopsy and the next of kin notification by the Coroner's Office. This is an active investigation.
