A major accident scene closed down a key intersection in Colorado Springs around the Citadel Mall for hours early Saturday morning.

It started at approximately 12:42 a.m. with a traffic stop attempted by Colorado Springs Police a few blocks away at E. Platte Avenue and Wooten Road, according to police.

Police say the driver, who was stopped for suspected drunk driving, took off.

CSPD says the driver veered into traffic and slammed into two other vehicles. Traffic was diverted from Southbound Academy Boulevard at Galley Road.

The DUI suspect was ejected from his SUV and taken to the hospital with serious injuries. It was then that he was also placed into custody for DUI among other traffic charges, according to a police report.

An occupant from one of the other vehicles suffered minor injuries.

Police just released information naming 38-year-old Maes Archuleta as the suspect in custody.
