COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- As the state gets ready to celebrate "Colorado Day" this weekend, local officials are preparing to make a Guinness World Record at the top of Pikes Peak.

Officials are asking residents to come be part of a record for the most people dunking donuts into coffee at the same time. The event celebrates the summit's famous donuts made at the top of the mountain.

Participation in the event is free and available on a first-come, first-served basis, according to the city. Visitors can also meet with representatives from the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, community partners and Ranger Donut.

The event will be held at the Summit Visitor Center at the top of the peak at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 1.

There is also a special sunrise opening on Saturday with gates opening at 4:30 a.m. for visitors with a timed-entry permit or shuttle reservation. Pikes Peak also has a sunset opening at 6:45 p.m. with timed-entry permits or shuttle reservations.

Information on reservations is available on the city's Pikes Peak webpage.
