New red light camera in east Colorado Springs

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- The Colorado Springs Police Department announced plans to put an additional red light camera in the city.

According to police, a new camera went live Thursday at the intersection of Maizeland and Academy. CSPD says the new intersection is entering a calibration phase and will remain in effect until the warning period begins on May 12.

During the calibration period, police say the cameras will flash or "go off" as drivers pass through the intersection. However, CSPD says this does not mean any citations are being recorded during this time.

Police say the calibration phase is just in place to ensure the cameras are working properly.

Additionally, CSPD says a 30-day warning period will begin on May 12 and end on June 12. During that time, motorists captured by the camera running a red light at the new intersection will be issued a written warning by mail.

On June 12, police say the camera will officially go live and drivers who enter the intersections after the light turned red will receive a $75 citation, no points will be assessed.

Below are the current intersections in Colorado Springs with red light cameras:

  • East Platte Avenue and Chelton Road
  • Briargate Boulevard and Lexington Drive
  • North Academy Boulevard and North Carefree Circle
  • North Academy Boulevard and Dublin Boulevard
  • Lake Avenue and East Cheyenne Mountain
  • Airport Road and South Academy Boulevard
  • East Platte Avenue and North Union Boulevard
  • East Woodmen Road and Duryea Drive
  • Austin Bluffs and North Academy
  • Platte and North Murray
  • Woodmen Road and Black Forest Road (currently in warning period)
  • Barnes Road and Tutt Boulevard (currently in warning period)
