Florence citizens react to city’s request for CBI investigation into missing money

FLORENCE, Colo. (KRDO) -- City leaders in Florence have requested an investigation by The Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to look into missing taxpayer money.

The request for state authorities comes just days after 13 Investigates revealed at least $95,000 in city taxpayer money was used for interest-free loans for employees.

Florence Police Chief Shane Prickett says he left a message for CBI to investigate missing funds. He also requested assistance from the Pueblo Police Department, according to an email he sent 13 Investigates.

There is still a list of issues some taxpayers want to see in the Florence City government.

"A financial clean bill of health," Tim Jordan said.

"Really important that we have a good HR .. where employees feel comfortable going," Gail Nelson said.

"I want the same thing I do for big government, accountability and transparency," Janna Hagen said.

For years, they have been pushing for answers on their governments' problem with calls for transparency largely unanswered until 13 Investigates stepped in.

Long-time resident Morrie Aves ran for mayor twice on the campaign slogan "Let's Follow the Money" but didn't win the races. Aves passed away in February.

Councilman Brian Allen acknowledged Aves at the Monday evening council meeting.

"There was a lot of people who were right, and there was a lot of people who were wrong." Allen said. "Thank you to Chelsea. Thank you to Morrie and Laurie Aves. Thank you to every citizen."
